Wise County Forest School began with a simple idea: that time in nature has the power to shape confident, capable, and curious people. What started as a small, volunteer-led effort has grown into a welcoming community where individuals of all ages come together to learn, explore, and connect outdoors.
Located in Alvord, Texas, and meeting in the open spaces of the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grassland, our program offers a place where children, teens, and adults can step away from screens and routines to engage directly with the natural world. Here, learning happens through experience—whether that’s building a fire, identifying plants, navigating the land, or simply asking questions and following curiosity.
Our approach centers on hands-on, play-based learning that encourages independence, resilience, and creativity. Through guided activities, skill-building opportunities, and open exploration, participants develop not only practical outdoor knowledge but also confidence, teamwork, and a deeper awareness of their environment.
As a completely free, volunteer-driven program, Wise County Forest School exists to serve the community. We are committed to keeping our space accessible, inclusive, and grounded in respect—for one another and for the land we share. We believe that nature is one of the best teachers there is, and our goal is to create an environment where people feel safe to grow, take risks, and discover what they’re capable of.
At its heart, Wise County Forest School is about connection—to nature, to community, and to lifelong learning.
